It’s been a privilege to have Mandy Martens on our Missions team as the visionary behind the Cityserve ministry the past 7 years. It is awesome to see how God has continued to open doors to our community. Here is a report from Mandy:
As I sit down to write this the sun is setting and I am reminded of God’s extravagant love. It is a love that goes beyond reason, one that fills the very sky with His glory. Night after night an extravagant reminder of His love and all that He has so freely given to us.
Ephesians 5:2 (MSG) says, “Mostly what God does is love you. Keep company with him and learn a life of love. Observe how Christ loved us. His love was not cautious but extravagant. He didn’t love in order to get something from us but to give everything of himself to us. Love like that.” I long to keep company with Him, to dwell more in His love and to love like He does. With a love that is not cautious but extravagant! A love that is counter cultural and looks not at what I can get but what I can give!
Cityserve has been given the unique opportunity to go out into our community and love extravagantly! This year we have had many opportunities to share God’s love to our city.
One way we have done this is through our local schools. We have been given amazing opportunities to be in the school, which allows us to get to know not only the students, but the teachers and parents as well. There is a group of women that goes to HD Stafford every Thursday to prepare and serve lunch to approximately 60 kids. These women have loved these kids well. They have gotten to know their names, built relationships with these kids and the teachers. The students and staff at HD Stafford weekly get a glimpse of God’s love.
This year Langley Secondary School celebrated their 110th anniversary. CLA was honoured to be a part of their planning committee and celebrations. As part of the celebration CLA created a scholarship to celebrate students who give back to their community. We were able to give this scholarship to a student that came to Canada as a Karen refugee. She had received a BC BOL from CLA as a little girl and in her essay application she fondly remembered the love and kindness that CLA has shared with her through the years.
On Saturday, August 24 we are co-hosting our 2nd Annual Back 2 School Event at Douglas Park Community School. This is a free event where we partner with other churches and organizations in Langley with the goal of providing all students with the best start to the school year.
We will be providing free: •Backpacks with school supplies •Hot Dog Lunch •Toiletries •Haircuts •Manicures for Moms •Produce Bags •Cotton Candy, Popcorn, Sno Cones •Family Fun Zone •Set up & Tear down
