I love being a father! It is one of the greatest joys of my life!
Since becoming a father almost 6 years ago to Mya, and since then having 2 more children, Abby (3 years) and Joshua (3 months) I am slowly beginning to understand the love our Heavenly Father has for us. What an incredible love!
Even as I write this, I am amazed at the grace of God in my own life.
There was a time, when as a single missionary in SE Asia, I thought I would never get married and have children. A pastor once asked me if I felt called to celibacy like the Apostle Paul. My very spiritual response was, ‘God forbid! I sure hope not!’
After getting married to my beautiful wife and having our first child Mya, there was also a season where I thought I would lose the privilege of being my daughter’s father in the ‘normal sense’ because of my own addiction issues. It was a terrifying thought. It was also a very sobering thought which has been a huge motivator in my own recovery journey.
Since then the Lord has taught me what it means to be a ‘father.’ To love unconditionally, to make sacrifices, to be the ‘priest’ of the home, to provide, to be firm, to show grace, to protect, to teach and encourage. The list could literally go on and on.
To be a father is a high calling. It’s also a huge responsibility. If I am perfectly honest, I am often overwhelmed by both. I want to be a ‘great father’, but I find myself apologizing to my kids often. I want to be a ‘great example’ but often find myself praying my kids end up more like their mom. Truthfully, like the Christian life, without Jesus’ help, we have an impossible task. But praise God, ‘Nothing is Impossible for those who believe’ (Mark 9:23).
Fathers, I want to encourage you to spend time with your Heavenly Father. Listen to His voice. Read His Word. Spend time in His presence. The more time you spend with Him, the more you will be like Him! John 15:4 ‘Abide in me and I will abide in you... neither can you bear fruit unless you abide in Me.’ The overflow of your relationship with the Lord will spill out to your children! Abide in Him! ‘Christ in you’ gives you the ability and the power to be a great father!
Happy Father’s Day!
