A couple of months ago I was out for a walk with one of my favourite neighbours. She wasn’t raised in church and in her own words will say that she has no interest in religion of any kind. She is one of these wonderful friends that has put up walls around her heart and is cautious when I even mention the name “Jesus”.
That is why I think it is so interesting that she made sure to mention to me to invite her to our women’s Christmas banquet at CLA. It seems that even though throughout the year she is closed to Jesus, there is something about Christmas in which she is a little open to receiving, a small part of her heart is open just a little.
It made me think a lot about the Christmas season. I read an article in “Christianity Today” that said 57 percent of people would go to church during the Christmas season if they were invited! In fact, it even went on to say, that even 29 percent of people who are typically opposed to church, yes, even atheists, will attend a church event around the Christmas season.
There is just something about the manger, something about the Christ child that draws even the most skeptic heart to open just a little at Christmas.
As we began to plan for our annual women’s Christmas Banquet, I had my neighbour in my mind. I couldn’t help but think that there would be so many others like her there on November 27th. That’s why this year, we are really bringing it all back to the manger. This beautiful story of our Saviour’s birth needs to be told again and again throughout the season.
I want to personally encourage every woman in the church to think about their “Friday Five”, that person you work with, walk with or coffee with who just does not know Jesus and invite them to this special event. With beautiful music, a breakfast or dinner buffet, free childcare in the morning service, and an amazing message from our gifted speaker, Krista Penner. I truly believe it is going to be a very special time together. This year we are also thrilled to be featuring a “Christmas Market”, an opportunity to support the wonderfully talented ladies in our own church.
