Summer at CLA!

We are excited to start summer at CLA!

Last week I sent you an email with a personal message about CLA’s summer plans and the province’s announcement opening to Phase 3. During the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s been important to communicate consistently and clearly to our church family.

Let me reiterate some of the key ideas. This summer we are encouraging Life Groups and friendship groups to gather respecting the physical distancing guidelines. Backyard BBQ’s, tailgate parties (some men are meeting on Monday nights) and small groups for Sunday morning church viewing are all good. We have been approved for gathering 50 people in each building (and when we are ready, two groups of 50 in the main building as long as different entrances, exits and washrooms are used). This allows a potential 150 people on an evening. The numbers are smaller during the day due to our Sunbeam daycare and staff.

There are four ministries that are restarting to meet in person this summer: Maple Ridge Campus (mid-week & youth), Recovery Church, Rev Youth in Langley, along with our Young Adults. There are strict COVID-19 protocols in place that include hand sanitizers, traffic flow, physical distancing and special custodial cleaning. Each person will have to pre-register for the event due to our 50 person per building rules. The first group to meet were our Young Adults, who met on Thursday night. They reserved the East Hall in CLA Centre (for 50) and the Conference Hall (for 50) in the main building. Both registrations were sold out and for the most part, the 100 who said they would come on Thursday were there (this is important as most of our events will have a waiting list). In both buildings people observed the new rules, enjoyed the worship and sharing, and were enthusiastic to be together.

Regarding Sunday’s main gathering, there will be no change for the summer. We are online for worship and Word. The numbers of those from all our campuses who have joined us live online at 9 AM or on-demand online later, have been strong. The "Isolated Not Alone" sermon series was well received. Many guests continue to join us each week. Giving has been strong and stable. Pre-service prayer has never been more robust. Most of the elements on Sunday are working well. It takes about 25 people in the auditorium to produce the worship service, and with the 50 people limit, there is little room for others. We expect that this could last till Christmas.

I want to thank you for your commitment to prayer and to giving. I enjoyed our Zoom prayer meeting last Sunday night. It has been a joy to see a new urgency and interest in prayer. Last week I asked you to consider making a special contribution to CLA as our fiscal year was ending (CLA runs its ministry and budget from July to June). I am happy to report that despite some significant challenges this year, CLA finished in the black. We are in a strong position to begin our summer kids camp (Camp in a Box), Bus Ministry Outreach, and Youth ministry (summer events). This week we launch a new preaching series. Wherever you are this summer, take us with you. Tune in on Sundays. Consider inviting others to join you.
