Learning To Follow Jesus

Whether you have little or much Bible knowledge, Jesus commands all of us to always be learning to follow Him. Just look at what Jesus calls us to be: His disciples.

Though Mike was one year ahead of me in high school, he was one year behind in English. After I presented to my Grade 11 English class an oral report on why Christianity will not pass away over time, Mike confronted me, and probed, “You really believe this Jesus stuff, don’t you?” Swallowing hard, I coughed up, “Yup, you bet I do!” Bracing for pushback, I was floored when Mike asked, “Could we talk sometime? I’d like to learn more about Jesus.” Excitedly, I agreed to it.

Over the next few weeks, Mike asked, and I did my best to answer, his many questions about Jesus. I’ll never forget the night he called me, confused. He needed to know, “Was Jesus reincarnated?” “No,” I answered, “Why are you asking?” Mike explained, “At the end of Mark’s Gospel Jesus was crucified, but at the beginning of Luke’s Gospel He was born as a baby.” I clarified the four Gospels are four separate biographical accounts of Jesus’ one, and only one, life on Earth. This question answered by myself, but others required me to study the Scriptures, while others required me to ask around. Without realizing it, Mike was learning how to follow Jesus with each question asked, and so was I. At that point in my spiritual journey, I had only been following Jesus for a little over a year. I hadn’t yet gone to Bible college. Like Mike, I too was learning as I was going; and, like Mike, I too was growing as I was learning.

Whether you have little or much Bible knowledge, Jesus commands all of us to always be learning to follow Him. Just look at what Jesus calls us to be: His disciples. Did you know the Greek word for “disciple” literally means “learner”? Friends, since Jesus is calling you to be His disciple, what are you learning these days?
